Job Description:

A top mining client has a vacancy for a Chief Safety Officer for their operations in KZN.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Confirm to legal requirements and duties of 2.17.4 and 2.9.2 of the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Lead/participate in site safety inspections giving instructions to the Safety Officer regarding the inspections and conduct Visible Felt Leadership through ensuring that the inspections are done properly and to required standards as well as signing off of the log book
  • Compile Safety Manager month end report and oversee incident and accident investigations through identify accidents deemed to be investigated and instruct the Safety Officer to conduct these ensures that the investigations are conducted accordingly
  • Co-ordinate, manage and participate in safety audits – Liaise with external auditors, stakeholders internally and externally,when utilised and review final report and sign off
  • Compile annual Safety Improvement Plan ensuring plans are in place for Operations and subordinates
  • Develop and Implement base-line and issue-based risk assessments
  • Apply hierarchy of control to all risk assessments as low as reasonably possible
  • Evaluate requirements of departmental staff, ensure that individuals are provided with the correct development opportunities, evaluate training courses as well as oversee the development of training material
  • Ensure that costs allocated for tasks within specified department are controlled within the prescribed budget


 

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Must have a National Diploma / Degree in Safety Management, Diploma / Degree in Mining Engineering or a related field would be an advantage
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a Chief Safety Officer according to the prescribed standard
  • Extensive experience in health and Safety as a Safety Officer within the mining industry
  • Chamber of Mines Safety Officer Certificate 1 and 2
  • SHEMTRAC
  • OHSAS 18001
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of gas testing, flame proofing, strata control
  • In depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including:  The Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Regulations, Occupational Diseases Act, Workman’s Compensation Act
